wheel size...

Post by rudy mettia »

I'm tired of my scrawny little 15 inch wheels. I have a 67 with drum brakes. Will our trucks allow us to run bigger wheels? Lets say 18 or 19 inch wheels. Does anyone have a wheel site they recommend? A brand they recommend? ect. Thanks,
Rudy

Before you put on Bigger wheels you need to update your Brakes first...thats what alot of People seem to forget.

In other words get you some Disc Brakes on there and dont Penny it and then go to the Bigger Wheels..

I'd tend to agree, just for the sake of the discussion. Make sure both your steering and brake components are in tip-top shape first, before upgrading. Wider/taller rolling stock will put more of a strain on them, so....

I haven't looked into larger wheels since I prefer 15" for the most part. I prefer filling out the wheelwells with rubber and not wheel...but I guess that's just a personal preference. But otherwise, yes you can use taller wheels. More often than not, when people use taller wheels they use shorter tires, so the overall diameter and height remains roughly the same.

One more thing, They dont make that many Wheels (that I think your looking for) in the 5 on 5 1/2 Wheel pattern..

Maybe it's changed but when I was looking there wasn't that many to chose from.

This is what Weld offers for our Trucks:

I did some trial and error on this as well and though I was not going bigger than 17" I did try 40 series rubber and they looked wimpy-didn't fill the wheel well enough (with 17's). I converted to disk up front at same time, and it was one of best upgrades i did. I can not imagine going to larger wheels with the stock brakes. I mean they are the worst part of these trucks. Everyone has stories of "I almost ... because the of my @#$! *& brakes."
It really depends on the Look you are after, Baggedinblue runs 20's and probably 40 series rubber, there's a truck from CN here -arrogant- with 20's - & if it ever get's really slammed it'll look fierce.
IMO My 275/60/17's on rear and 245/45/17 front fill the wheel well nicely with the mild lowering I have. Billet Specialties will make any of their wheels in 5 on 5.5 - (just bring $$$).

My truck has 275/60R15s on the back which are 28 inches tall, and 255/60R15s on the front which are 27 inches tall, and i think the stance looks good (stock sagging springs :D) and i dont have to jump up into the truck and I dont have to fall into it either. And I still don't see the big gripe about our breaks, my manual drums stop plenty quick, and have avoided several accidents, one that would have surely splattered a 4 year old chasing a ball.
