Dad's new 72

Post by SSW »

I have been trying to get my dad to buy a new truck for a while. He drives a 95 f150 with 300k, original motor & tranny. He does not like the high bed sides of the new trucks. He bought new a F100 in 72 and sold it shortly there after. He also later had a 71 camper special. I have had 2 crew cab bumps. So I decided on a 72 F100. The goal of the build is to make a super dependable old truck with a little modernization, while retaining the original charm.

Got the bed, hood, & fenders off to the body man, next week will take the rest to my buddy's shop to remove the 302 & C4 degrease & paint the frame to get it ready for a 91 5.0 EFI (with Ford remanufactured Long Block) and rebuilt/updated E4OD. Also ordered an under cab auxiallary tank from LMC will need to get that installed as well.

Seems like you should have done the Crown Vic Independent Front Suspension as well. Did you consider it? How about disk brakes in the front? Are you going to install dynamat, or something similar for sound and insulation?

It's looking great by the way! :)

Cheers,

I thought about the Crown Vic but did not want the truck lowered (Dad's truck not mine). I did add disc brakes from a 75 F100. I bought 80 mil Fatmat Rattle trap. Should get it in this weekend.

Got some of the wiring back in, added intermittent wiper swich, tested it & it works :). Also got most of the Fatmat Ratlle trap in, Disc/drum porportional valve on. The rims powder coated & New tires on. Tore the steering column down & got it figured out, the lower bearing was not existant & the retainer was half work through, parts coming & pieces at the powder coater should have steering column together next week. Put the dash pad in and put the back of the cab trim on. Got the throttle cable figured out for the EFI, just need to build a couple brackets. Should also get the bed back from paint this week.

I tore the ammeter out of the cluster today & shipped it off to Bob at RCCI, http://www.rccinnovations.com/index.php ... u-volt-all . To get it rewired as a volt meter $35. To order scroll to the bottom, select other & ship it to him. He does not have an overlay for a 72 F100, so it will still say D-C, but that is fine with me. I know it will actually be reading Volts. Also ordered the Headlight relay kit. I remember as a kid our headlights blinking on & off in our 71 F250. Picked up a new 3G alternator for a 94 mustang, mounting & serpentine belt should work on the 91 5.0.

Had a Hose shop make a power steering hose that would connect the 91 pump to the 72 gear box. They adapted to AN. Also used the metal return line off the 91 to add some length for cooling. Got the steering column back together. Installed a "Cargo" light switch to control the Rigid LED's (via relays ofcourse) in the rear bumper as well as the in the bed LED's. I used the old wiper switch as it has 2 postions (it was left over since I upgraded to the 79 delay switch) and i had a hole in the dash for the PO. Turned out good, looks factory. Started dissecting the 91 FI harness elimating what we don't need. and comparing to the 72 wiring diagram found on this great website (although the 72 diagram does not show the nuetral switch, other than that it has been spot on). Picked up a 3g alternator harness at the local pick a part as well as a air box which I think I can make work.
