1974 460 in a 1970 HighBoy

Post by torocon »

I have a nice 460 and c6 out of a 1974 Ford Wagon. I would like to swap the 360 in my 1970 Highboy. The Highboy is standard trans.
Anyone ever attempted this? Any suggestions. The 460 and C6 tranny have 5000 miles after complete rebuilds.

It's one of the more popular swaps. There are aftermarket motor mounts and aftermarket frame stands made as well as special headers to do it.

It's a real pain. Once you start putting a 460/429 in a pre-79 4x4 you'll see why Ford never did it from the factory. There's not enough room for it. Your C-6 is probably the long car version with a slip yoke. Not gonna fit right in a 4x4 at all.

If you really like 460's go for it. I'd sell the 460 and slushbox and use the money to feed the 360. The only gas engine I'd pull a 360 in favor of is a 300 six.

I have a 460 in my 71 F250 4X4 without much problem. It is bolted to a NP435 and I kept the stock exhaust manifolds just because I am not a big header fan. L&L products sell everything ya need. I used their towers, a bell from a 351M, the flywheel and clutch assy from the 360. You will also need a rear sump oil pan.

Sell the C6 to fund the towers and bell.

Autofab now sells nice engine mounts for the 460 in a highboy. I put them in mine after ripping 3 sets of L&L's apart (sorry Greg) But their headers are the $hit.

I also have torn 2 sets of l&l motor mount and the last time was like pulling teeth to get them warrantied. I guess lifetime warranty is only for the lifetime until they brake. Other than that it is faily cut and dried 360 flywheel will work on all internally balanced 460's. You will need a oil pump pick up screen and main bolt stud for the screen to bolt up to as well as the rear sump pan. :2cents:

  They told me on the last set that they were the last ones they'd cover.... still BS I had to pay shipping on all 3 sets both ways and it was their product that was faulty. :x

I had considered a efi 460 swap, had looked at L&L but their prices scared me away. A bit pricy for what I figure I can make or scrounge.

Guys
I am running a 429 in a 72 F250 4X4. Every thing behind the engine is stock. I used a 351/400 bell housing, made my own motor mounts by modifying the original mounts so I could set the engine where I wanted it. I can still use my original fan shroud. I used the original 429 exhaust manifolds and had to slightly notch the upper frame flange on the passengers side for clearance.
The engine has been in there for about 10 years and I haven't had a problem with the mounts or anything else. This is a work truck and it sees some very heavy duty. I pull a 21 ft trailer a lot and routinely cross the scales above 18,000 lbs. It sees both off road and highway duty. I also have a hydraulic boom and winch mounted in the bed and I use it as a wrecker too. The truck weighs 7200 lbs. I did all the fabrication my self before I ever heard of L&L or any other supplier. Sense I did my conversion I have looked at a lot of "packages" and I am not very impressed with most of it. I wouldn't change anything I've done because it works. If I were to ever do another swap there is little I would do differently.
