Power Steering whine.

Post by heep70 »

Anybody else experenced this whine that comes from the PS pump? Is there a fix? I tried a new pump, the whine is still there.

My neighbor found it to be funny to place a slab of cheese on my hood.

Is it when you turn the wheel? driving straight? or just idling?

Yes, Yes and Yes. More so when it is cold out and turning the wheel.

Are you using "Type F" Tranny Fluid?

Give it a try,it is a "Technicians Bulletin" for Power Steering units

HHhhmmm, I beleave I am using the "F" type fluid. I will have to go out and check the container label.

If not, how do I go about drianing (flushing) out the fluid to replace it with the "F" type?

Thanks, Greg

I thought about disconecting a line, point it into a bucket and fire it up. The refill it

cobraF100, Is there a type F power steering fluid or are you talking about tranny fluild? I know they both work. I just didn't know if there is a type F PS fluid. Right now the stuff I am using does not indacate it is a type F.

Typical old Ford noise. Turn up the radio.lol I have the newer style pump on my 72 and after 3 different remans I just kind of tuned out the pump noise. It steers right and don't leak.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

On fluid, not sure of the lubricating propertys but the designated P/S fluid is supposed to take more heat. I haven't noticed any difference that way but the type F seems to entrap air worse as in foam up. Try bleeding the air out. Do this by starting the engine and turning the wheels all the way to the stop. Shut off the engine and leave it for 10-15 minutes, repeat in the opposite direction. It helps if it is warmed up.
In real cold weather either type is like mayonaise. For cold weather I used the Mecedes-Benze extreme temp stuff as it was the only one I found that would come out of the bottle in.

Yes, I have been pretty much excepting the whine noise for over a year now. I bled it when I did the power steering conversion, so I am thinking :hmm: the air is out by now :? . Seems my old 72 did the same thing. I just thought I would throw my whine (problem) out there and see if anyone has came up with a fix yet. Thanks for the input. I know now that I am one of many. i have a 72 f250 and a 71 & 72 f100 that do not have the whine in them. lucky i guess. i sell a product called tri-bolon. it is a metal conditioner that many people have put in their power steering pumps with great success with noise. all it take is a couple ounces per quart and can also be used in engines, transmissions and differentials. if you are interested you could give me a call. i have a shop in marysville washington. my number is 360-653-7284. or e-mail me at billscustom@verizon.net.

When I was in the Army, I was driving a rusted-out and barely-running '67 Mustang coupe. The power steering pump on it was going out and whining like that all the time. Actually had somebody ask me once if the car was a sleeper and I was running a supercharger under the hood!
