glove box liners

Post by dotcentral »

I pulled the glove box liner out of my 67 parts truck and discovered they are molded, one piece affairs, no fold lines, no sharp corners. It also has a lip to cover the gap between the liner and the hole for the glove box. Seems like I'd heard they were different, but apparently they are interchangeable.

It seems a little smaller in size, but fit in the 70 easily and with no fighting. The one in my 70 is like the repro's sold by all the venders, boxy and with sharp edges from fold lines and seams. It is a wrestling match to get in and out, and everytime I take it out it gets a little more damaged.

Glove box liner?? :hmm: You mean there is suppose to be something in that hole  .

Yes they were molded. It's too bad one of us can't figure out how to make a mold and maybe repro a few.

a person could make form to what you would need and tear up several old glove boxes soak them till they fell apart back into the original mush that they were made from strain the mess old through a fine screen this may have to be done several times to check if its ready and then pour into the form and wait.. its the same principle as recycling paper. i seen that done on tv one of those pbs programs. a person could use a blender to chop the pieces even smaller for less soaking time.

Mine must have been replaced at some point. It's made from sheet metal.

I was thinking fiberglass or even a good quality plastic that wouldn't melt.

If someone were good with sheetmetal,(and I'm not) I think it would be possible to take apart one of the folded cardboard ones and use is as a sheetmetal templete.

An aftermarket AC unit shouldn't cause problems with the glove box liner.

My Old Air Products Hurricane A/C heater unit takes up less room than the original heater but does cut into the glove box room and only the shallower liner will fit.

I like the fiberglass idea. I think a mold could be carved out of something and then lay the fiberglass over the mold.

When did the switch to the folded cardboard liner happen? I have to think the folded liner in my 70's was original, I can't picture the people I bought the truck from replacing a damaged glove box liner.

I help a Dirt track team from time to time building aluminum bodys. I was also thinking of taking my folded cardboard box apart and building one with the sheet metal brake. But I havent had time to get around to it either. Shouldnt be hard at all though.

I bought a new one when I first got my truck and never put it in. Since then I have purchased two parts trucks with mint glove boxes. If anyone is intersested in either a aftermarket or used one let me know.
