power steering for a 72 f100 4x4

Post by jbuck »

Hi, I just bought this 72 f100 4X4, Its steering is something scary. I just drove it home and put in a good motor and its been sitting, theres no way I'm gonna go over 40mph like this. I've done some searches and from what I've seen these trucks only had manual steering??? I could live with that, but if I've gotta get all new parts I'd rather just install power steering. Do you guys know if I got any choices here?

You've got a few options. There's a tutorial in the tech section on how to convert to PS using a 2WD steering box, but requires a little fabrication. Or you can use the PS setup from a '78-'79 pickup....it's a real PS setup, not the power-assist used in the early-'70s which was a major POS and not recommended. This is the route I'd suggest going. The last alternative is to check E-bay. There's a guy there who often has a complete kit listed, but it's kinda pricey...around $700, IIRC.
