Gadzooks! I am way overdue with an update...

I wish I had more to report, but the project has been stalled since July due to some higher priority jobs that have to be done.

Image

Before it stalled out, I managed to finish clearing off the front clip and radiator support. The rust in the front clip was as expected, but there was more on the firewall than I had anticipated, so whether I like it or not, the engine is coming out so I can thoroughly inspect the firewall. There have been some revisions to my plan over the last few months. The biggest of which will be a conversion to a C6 auto and possibly power steering depending on what parts I can round up. I've also given up on having a driver any time soon. Since I have to have it apart for repairs, I might as well do what upgrades I can while its apart and save myself from having to tear it apart again.

As soon as time allows, I plan on starting to gut the cab in preparation for welding on the firewall. This will give me a number of smaller jobs that I can tackle in the garage as I am able. If it turns out that the cab is too far gone, I'll start looking for a better one to replace it with.

I now understand what I've read in so many car magazines over the years - "It started off as a simple freshening up that got out of hand." :D

Well, life got complicated and the '71 got put on indefinite hold. Things are beginning to quiet back down so I'm dusting off the build thread and getting ready to dive in head first into the project. I've spent a lot of time in the last couple of years bringing some low-buck beaters back to life for the kids heading off to college which altered my perception of my project build. What started out as patching things up and hitting the road has turned into a more complex build. Here's the rough outline of what I want to accomplish:

1. Floorboards
2. Cab mounts - OEM style from Dennis Carpenter
3. Rust abatement & repair
4. Rebuild engine with 390 bottom end, mild cam, 4 bbl intake, and possibly headers.
5. Convert from manual to C6 auto (left knee is not fond of clutches any more)
6. Later model disc brake front suspension
7. Possible conversion to power steering (still need to research that a little more)
8. Go through the electrical system
9. Figure out how to add AC at some point
10. Windshield and all door and window seals.

One benefit of the late start is that I'm much more comfortable with my welder and have had quite a bit of practice since then.

Its funny how you get held up, and then it works out. Exact same thing for me on the 250. It is a good plan you got there for a nice sweet driver. Welcome back and looking forward to more!

It wasn't that hard. I'm stubborn and it's somewhat taken apart already... :D

I've been pretty careful to keep track of them, but after a quick run to pick up a 390 crank and some .030 pistons & rods turned into a little more than I anticipated, I don't think it will be that big of an issue. It's a good thing I decided to take my other truck.

LOL Reminds me of when I asked my late father-in-law if he happened to have something hanging around, he would think for a minute and then tell me that he just threw two of them out in the rubbish last week. It didn't matter whether it was a certain size bolt or a flux capacitor - he had just tossed it in the rubbish.

I've spent some time after work cleaning up the greasy cam I scored on my parts run. I've identified it as a Ford C6AZ-6250-A from '67 - '69 (.438" lift & 256° duration). With that much lift, it looks like I'm going to have to change out the valve springs before I'm ready to fire it up.

I'm making another parts run in the morning to pick up some more odds and ends before my friend scraps out the last of his bump-side parts. I'm not sure what I'll come home with, but I'm sure it will be interesting. I've got the cam cleaned up and will be taking it with me to get it the once over before deciding whether it'll go in the engine.

Expect more pictures tomorrow...

Here's the haul from my latest parts run...

Image
Solid door shells and a pair of cab mounts that are more solid than the stamped steel ones I have on the shelf.

Image
Yes, it's a beat-up core support, but its solid where mine is not so I'm going to use it to patch up the original support.

There were a few items I didn't get to pick up because of some accessibility issues at his shop building. Maybe next time...

The weather has NOT been cooperating here this weekend so I've been in the garage cleaning parts...

Image

Preliminary measurements show that the crank is possibly 0.020" under already. It's pretty greasy at the moment and is begging to soak in some degreaser for a couple of days. After its cleaned up, I'll make the final call on sizing. Maybe next weekend will be more cooperative for working outside.
