Sounds like the clutch/tranny to me!

What kind of noise do you hear when this happens?

CK the driveline. U-joints, and make sure the U-bolts on the rear axle
are tight. If you have a jack and stands you can jack up the rear axle
and put stands under it and run it in gear to see whats going on. Or pull
the driveline out and CK the U-joints to see which one is binding.

:yt: I changed an auto to a 4 speed once and it always had a shudder after that. didn't have it before.
I figured it was the higher gears that caused it.

My 71 f100 always did that when it was still a straight drive, until I went to a diaphram type pressure plate. It could also be caused by the flywheel being glazed over. It is always a good idea to have your flywheel surfaced when installing a new clutch kit.
I went to an automatic and stopped all the shaking. lo

When I have seen this in the past it was clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.

I have that problem often in my trucks, normally its because I'm hard on the clutch and I rip the disks damper springs apart. First thing stop dumping the clutch at lights :hmm: The 10" clutch don't like this.
then replace the disk I'm so aggressive that now I just use autowecker disks (on the old small diameter clutches)
cause even new ones only last 1mo.

Only once was it from the drive shaft it self.

I'm with bwc302 on this one. Check out the throw out bearing. I had that same issue on a hot rod that I use to have and that was it. If you are going through clutch plates then you may want to go to Napa or some other big name part dealer and have them line you up with a performance disk that is a little thicker and tougher.

I looked around for months. And I didn't come up with any performance clutch for the old small diameter clutch set , later I got mad and use one for a 460 or something in conjunction with a new used large flywheel & bell housing. It was bigger diameter and I was able to get a performance clutch set.
