460 transmission

Post by wcm413 »

Hi , I was reading on a website that a C6 transmission takes 50 to
60 horsepower from your engine . Anyone know if this is about right ?
Also would anyone know what kind of 4 speed manual transmission,
not the granny gear type that would bolt up to a 460 ? Thanks for any
info .

i think it is the bellhousing that you will need for a 460. i think from what i've read here that all manuals will bolt up genericly to any ford bellhousing. being that its just four bolts that hold the tranny to the bellhousing.

I have a 460 bellhousing but it only accepts a 360 flex plate or something like that, a smaller diameter flexplate and clutch assembly. Contact Heep70 He will have the details and you can let me know if your interested in the bellhousing I have.

I've been reading about some things you can do to
a C6 to reduce friction and increase horsepower . I'm
going to check in to that and see how costly and just how
much it'll help because I know its bound to be pretty
expensive for the change over to a manual transmission
which is what I'd like to do but money is an object . I
appreciate your help tho .

Thanks ,

Where do these guys come up with this stuff? In 3rd a C6 has the input
shaft locked to the output shaft. 1to1 !!

overdrive? GearVendors?($2100.00+ bolt on overdrive) for a 20-30% increase in mileage- if you were doing a good bit of hiway driving it would pay for itself inside 20,000 mi-jd

I think they replace somethings in the transmission with needle bearings
and that reduces friction which increases horsepower in the lower gears
plus the torque converter eats up some horse power too . I dont do any highway driving at about 8 to 10 miles to the gallon its strictly a hobby
truck .

OK, here's how it works. If you've been inside a C6 the first thing that
you'll notice is the massive size and weight of the drums and planets.
Say compared to a 400. To accelerate the car, this stuff has to spin up
to speed by the engine. Kinda like having a too heavy flywheel. Funny
thing is. I think there are some records set in S/S with a 428/C6. I could
be mistaken.

That makes sense . This is the info I found on a built transmission. The main problem I have tho is the stock leaf springs that came on the truck cant handle the engine and it will bend the longest leaf at the front connection . My son found some but they must have been 1 ton because
they sat centered on the rear end housing and mine have about a 24" front and 28" rear off set plus they were a few inches longer . I'm still
trying to find a cure for that . No need in adding more horsepower until I get that taken care of .

Thanks ,

Bill

I have heard reports of 30+ horsepower parasitic drain. But who knows what gear and what rpm these numbers come from.
I didn't know there was a big block C4 until recently. Apparently there was some few 351M engines that came with a C4. I saw the bell housing for one go on ebay last week.
I am running a toploader 4 speed behind mine.
