300 I6 electronic distributor

Post by Ohiotinkerer »

Anyone have a good recommendation for an aftermarket electronic distributor for a 300 I6? Want something HEI style so parts availability isn't a problem if I'm on the road somewhere and have a problem and would like something made in the USA!

No need to bother with an aftermarket HEI. Go into your local parts store or on RockAuto.com and order a '77 F100 Duraspark distributor, ignition box and coil. You'll need some wiring but American Autowire sells a harness for around $100. Then it's like factory original.

I should have added this in my original post - the engine it's going on is gonna be running alot of Clifford Engineering parts including their dual Weber setup so I'm gonna be making some serious power - will the Duraspark keep up with what I'm planning to do?

Unfortunately, never had anything with other than stock drive train so can't really speak to that. With that said, every Ford vehicle from around '75 through the 80s ran the Duraspark. This includes I6 F600s up to the big block 460s in trucks and Lincolns making some good HP and killer torque. I do know that when I swap into a simple Duraspark ignition I up my plug wires to 8mm performance grade and increase my plug gap to .045 and it really likes the hotter spark.

Ohiotinkerer: Waaaaay back in about 1980 or so, a fellow I knew got sent off to trade school for his six or eight weeks of yearly apprentice training....while there, they got to spend some time playing with a synchograph. (aka: distributor testing/tuning machine)
So, for giggles, he pulled the distributor out of his 460 powered Dentside Lariat pickup, and one of his classmates pulled the HEI distributor out of his Chevy.....They spun them both up, and the 460's duraspark distributor would go a bunch higher (rpm) than the HEI before starting to break up:)
So, I would find a Duraspark distributor for your application, and if you doubt the OEM Duraspark module is up to the task, substitute an MSD box, it will definitely get the job done:)

I bought this brand from Rockauto, but for a 289 small block in my '64 Fairlane. Worked perfectly. Drove it for 2-1/2 years before trading it for a truck. https://www.wps-inc.com

Randy: Just a heads-up: I'm not sure what happened, but the link you included is for Western Power Sports Inc, a company that deals with stuff for Motorcycles, bicycles, UTV's etc??
They don't appear to have any automotive items in any of their numerous catalogs?

The Co. on RockAuto is World power Systems

Cheers!
James
