Shift issues steering column

Post by jurrien »

I need some help with my steering column.

I have restored my truck including all the wiring, also disassembled the steering column. I probably put it back together wrong but I can't figure out what is wrong.

So i hope someone else had the same problem or has an solution.

My aut transmission shifts bij hand but not with the shifter collar. It will only shift if I grab the collar with 2 hands push it down and turn it. Which damages my (new) paint :(

Does anyone has an idea how to solve this?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like you may have shifter or shift detent plate issue. Pulling forward on the shift lever causes the other end to rotate out of the shift detent plate which allows you to rotate the shift collar to the appropriate gear selection. By pushing down on the collar you are effectively doing the same thing. However, you should not be able to push down on the shift collar. That kind of implies you have something wrong, internally, in the shift collar. Possibly a broken center section like in the photo below. Here's my rebuild thread for an automatic column that might give you some clues to what may be going on. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=72274

Thanks for your answer and link.
I wasnt sure i put the spring in properly but i did.

I have de column dissambled now and i think somehow the shifter linkage tube looks to short.

Does anyone has dimension of this?

Edit: Found it 28.25". but it is the right length.

so i'll see if i can refit the upper tab half an inch higher. which hopefully solves the problem.

the uper tap doesn't stop the shift collar and the lower is to high to connect the shift linkage i found out.
that's why i can push it down and shift :hmm:

Fixed it by welding a ring on the top :D
