hood emblems

Post by lamyed8 »

I have a 1969 f100 am second owner. the hood has no emblems that spell out FORD on the front. There is no evidence of any body work or any notice of holes ever been drilled in the hood for the letters. I have another 69, 2 70's, a 68, and 2 72's and they all have emblems. What's going on with this one? Thanks.

I have only ever seen original hoods with the lettering. My guess is somebody filled the holes in at some point. Not saying that's the case, but based on what I have seen.

There had to be the rare one without the emblems. Good question!
Maybe it was a special order request? Is the hood original to the truck?

Or maybe a replacement hood at some point in the trucks life? I could see a aftermarket hood coming with no holes and a body shop just painting to match?

It has no signs of being reworked. I took it to a reliable body shop and they considered it to be original.

These emblems are available from Mac's Antique Auto Parts p/n F-16606-3. They are listed for 67-69 ford trucks and cost $26.70 as of today. 67's have like a mirror finish and later models have horizontal lines through them outlined by a decent chrome frame but very nice though. Center a piece of wide masking tape across your existing hood without the emblems and trace in where the holes will be. Carefully remove the masking tape and make sure it is level with your hood, mark where the new holes will be, lightly center punch the tracings and drill slightly undersize raising the drill size to where the new studs will just slip in, apply attach nuts from the back. Hope this helps.

My 67 hood letters have the "billet" lines in them. The later bumps have a more satin finish, I believe.

Yes I figured that the lines had a proper name and Thanks for the info! My '67 Mercury M100 has the mirror finish lettering and my other '69's have the billet lines.

My guess on this is that the hood was replaced way back and the letters were not replaced. I doubt that even an OE hood would have the holes already drilled. The paint and process used at the time was much less advanced than now, it would be difficult if not impossible to tell a quality job from original in my opinion.

Think about our Mercury brothers sold North of the border, I'd guess many more left the line with no letters.

My 72 does not have FORD or the side emblems. I have bought the pieces, does anyone know if a drill template exists, or have measurements where the side F250 and FORD letters go on the hood?

my 1968 F500 didn't have any hood emblems but we purchased some plastic chrome letters at the auto store. we got "F" "5" "0" and "0"

so my hood now says F500. you can put any four letters or numbers on there. it's cool. also my hood has rust holes and some dents and not
much paint left. i can't find a photo.
