C6 shifting early, how can it be changed

Post by calvinstoy »

I recently changed the intake to a 4 barrel and did a shift kit in the trans, now with the increased vacuum to the modulator, the trans shifts early. The modulator is not adjustable, can I put some sort of orifice in the vacuum line to cause the trans to shift later? I did a quick test with the valve I pulled off of the distributer (mine is "green", I understand that they are different colors for different delays in vacuum advance to the distributer) and it certainly helped. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Vacuum modulators are also available for auto tranny's in an adjustable version.

How hard are the modulators to replace?

Your right, easy 5 minute job, however the first run the trans shifted at about 3000 rpm with my foot in it, so I turned the modulator screw in 1/4 turn and there was no change. Then i turned it out 1/2 turn no change. After much messing around with I got the thing so far out of wack it never shifted that high again even with the modulator screw all the way in. I bought another one just to give it a shot and it still wants to shift early. Does anyone know what the color band signifies on the modulator. Mine is a purple band push in regulator.

Here's a good thread on shift speeds: http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1115

Try checking your shift speeds without flooring it which activates the kickdown linkage, try 3/4 throttle.

What would happen if the modulator is disconnected from its vacuum source and the vacuum source was plugged? I know it will shift later and harder, but how much later? Harder is what I am after so that would be a plus.

Hey C.
check out his place. Your question can probably be answered here or it might have already been, if you are willing to scan some of the threads.
Hope this helps you.

That site was very informative, I ended up putting a longer pin in the modulator. Now it shifts nice and hard at about 4k with you foot in it.
