Tranny Swap

Post by GreaseMonkey »

Has anybody ever done a Dodge NV4500 5speed manual tranny swap in a 68-72 with a FE motor before? If so let me know of any details.

Thanx for the link to the post Greg. I have infact found out how you have to do this swap, I just wanted to see if anyone had already done this for their opinions on the project.

To begin with this is the conversion parts and how to for a 4x2 swap. You use a stock FE bellhousing and stock clutch fork. Advance Adapters have the adapter plate to mate the Ford FE bh to the NV4500 for $267.95. It comes with the pilotshaft bearing. You have to use the Gasoline Dodge NV4500 version preferably the 92-97 model because in 98 on up dodge moved the spedo cable to the rearend. I think you can order the internal spedo gear and the attachment assembly for a 92-97 off the net and convert it over. For the clutch part you have to use the Chevy 11" NV4500 clutch disk and a ford t-18 through out bearing. Driveshaft wise you have to basically get the dodge part and your ford part and have them hybreded together because the tail shaft uses a slipyoke.

So then on an F250 or F350 4x4 which has the speedo on the T-case (I am not sure where it is on an F100 4x4 :hmm: ) any NV4500 will work?

If you do this conversion. You should write up a tech article w/ pics for us to have for future use. :) And for lazy people like me that don't want to do the research :o

There is an updated replacement main shaft & nut kit that you can get to fix the problem. I believe it was from either www.truckparts-specialists.com or www.drivetrain.com. The NV4500 I bought doesnt have that problem but I still think I am gonna go ahead and get it along with the basic rebuild kit. Mainly because I know how I drive and better safe than sorry.
